Cycling With The Pros...
The hills and mountains of the Marina Alta provide perfect road cycling in unspoiled areas of outstanding natural beauty. The area is used by many UCI professional cycling teams during the winter months as it provides the perfect terrain for training camps before the hectic European racing schedule takes place.
The local climb of the Casa Oliva is the world famous Coll De Rates (pictured right), featured in Global Cycling Networks top 10 Spanish Mountain climbs. The climb of the Coll De Rates is a good test for any level of cyclist, it is not the hardest climb in the area but certainly one of the most spectacular with fantastic views of the coast and the Jalon Valley.
Those looking for the hard climbs in the region should test themselves with the Port De Tudons, a long climb in both directions and was featured in stage 20 of the 2016 Vuelta España.
Some Local Climbs & Routes
Of course there is plenty of great cycling routes around the local area, but here is 3 of our favourites!
The climb of Vall D'Ebo should be climbed from the approach to Pego, it is a wonderful climb with panoramic views looking out towards the coastal town of Denia. This climb is picturesque with a handful of picturesque switchbacks, it is a favourite climb of the pro riders and has featured in the Vuelta España in recent times.
El Castell de Guadalest
The climb up to the Castle at Guadalest is a rewarding one, it is home to one of Spain's oldest Castles built in the 17th Century. There is also a view point here to take in the impressive Lake in the valley below, the road continues up to the small mountain town of Confrides, this is the highest point on the road approximately 800 metres (2,500 ft).
Castells De Castells
A short 40km loop from Casa Oliva with over 1,000 metres of elevation, this route takes you over the Coll De Rates down towards Tarbena and then right along the valley to Castells. The road towards Tarbena packs some punches with a 13% climb, followed by a short and steep techincal descent into Castells De Castells.
It's not just all about road cycling here, there is plenty of Mountain biking trails to be discovered!
